Winter Co-curricular Dance - Mandatory Meeting

There is a mandatory meeting Thursday, November 1, from 2:30-3:00PM in Lane Dance Studio for all those interested in taking dance for their co-curricular activity winter term. Every one interested must attend. Please contact me if you are unable to be at the meeting.

Course Descriptions:

DANCE TECHNIQUE I (Fall)
This course is designed to develop the technical ability of the beginning dance student. Students will be introduced to various dance styles and will concentrate on ballet, modern, jazz, and hip-hop. The basic concepts of proper body alignment and spatial awareness will be the main focus of the course.

DANCE TECHNIQUE II (Spring)
This course is designed to continue the technical development of the dance student by increasing his or her movement vocabulary and through the introduction of self-correction skills. The course will offer an in-depth study of one of the following dance styles: ballet, modern, jazz or hip-hop. Students will also begin to explore choreographic principles. A basic dance history component is included in this course.
Prerequisite: Dance Technique I or Dance Training for Athletes; or by permission of the instructor with prior dance experience

DANCE TECHNIQUE III (Full Year Course)
This full year/two-semester course is designed to further the development of the serious dancer by focusing on musicality and artistry. The course emphasizes ballet and modern technique but also incorporates jazz and hip-hop. The curriculum concentrates on choreographic principles, basic anatomy, composition, performance skills, and dance history.
Prerequisites: Dance Technique I and Dance Technique II; or by permission of the instructor with prior dance experience

WINTER DANCE CO-CURRICULAR
This course meets during the co-curricular time slot in the winter term. The course focuses on ballet, modern, jazz and hip-hop technique. It is a performance based class; students who participate are required to perform in the annual dance concert. Each two hour class is structured to include a strength and conditioning workout, technique training and choreography.

Dress Requirements for Class

All students must have his or her hair tied back away from the face and secured. Baggy and loose-fitting clothing, pajama bottoms, and jeans are not permitted. Please limit jewelry as it may break easily or cause injury to you or fellow dancers.

The following requirements apply to Dance Technique III and Winter Co-curricular Dance. They are suggested for Dance Technique II. Exercise or workout attire is sufficient for all other courses.

Girls: Ballet – Black leotard (any style) with pink, black, or tan tights.
Pink ballet slippers. Ballet skirt or form-fitted shorts are optional.

Modern/Jazz/Hip-hop – Black leotard (any style).
Dark colored dance/warm-up pants (black, navy, dark gray) or form-fitted shorts. If shorts are worn you must wear tights underneath.
No shoes or socks for modern.
Black Jazz shoes must be worn for jazz.
Sneakers should be worn for hip-hop.

** A good pair of black dance pants is needed for performance.

Guys: Ballet – Dark colored (black, navy, dark gray) dance/warm-up pants with plain white or black T-shirt. Black ballet shoes.

Modern/Jazz/Hip-hop – Dark colored (black, navy, dark gray) dance/warm-up pants with plain white or black T-shirt.
Black jazz shoes must be worn for jazz.
No shoes or socks for modern.
Sneakers should be worn for hip-hop.
